Instructions - WiseCMS: Redirect to Another URL Address

Website redirection is used when a page needs to be directed to a new address.

Such a situation might arise, for example, during a website redesign, when the URLs of pages change. It's also not advisable to remove content/articles from homepages without redirecting the old link to some new URL address. Redirection ensures that visitors can find the content, for instance, when search engines still find the old or broken URL address.

In the case of redirections, it should be noted that this is only a temporary means of informing search engines about which content on the site is relevant. Since search engines fundamentally do not like a site to have many redirections, it is advisable to gradually and progressively remove old redirected content from the site. We are talking about a time frame of months here. In the case of some really popular links, it is worth considering whether to remove the old article at all.

1. Redirections are done from the system administration side under the section

→ "CMS"
→ "Settings"
→ "Redirections"

A new redirect can be added by clicking at the top of the page

→ "Add Redirect"

2. In a normal case, the following information is sufficient for a redirect.

From: In this field, add the address of the old / "broken" link from which you want to redirect to a new address. Note that the address is added without the beginning part of the company's domain (for example, in WiseNetwork redirects we leave out the beginning of the address http://www.wisehelp.fi.)

To: In this field, add the address to which you want to link and whose content you want to open.

Finally, click

→ "Save"

Finally, it is advisable to check that the redirection works. This can be done by pasting the original URL address (the one from which you want to link) into the browser's address bar and seeing if the link leads to the new address.
